Barry's Relatively Speaking: On all Fours
Posted on Jul 07, 2012
Barry's Relatively Speaking shares the personal experiences and stories of genealogists found in the Everton Genealogical Helper Magazine collection on MyGenShare.com. H. Smith shares the following experience.
I have such a small amount of time to spend on searching for my ancestors, but love it very much. My family has had a great deal of entertainment at my amateurish efforts, and with very good reason. For example, once during very rainy weather, I was trying to find info-mation in an old cemetary. I had located what was supposed to be my great-grandmother's grave. There was no marker, only a small metal plate. Having been told that sometimes these markers have been written with an imprint that remains after the paper card containing info-mation has rotted away, I got down on my "all-fours" and marked across the plate with a piece of paper and pencil in the same manner we used to rub off the imprint of coins when I was a child. There was writing there!! I very excitedly got up from the mud and held the paper to the light to read it, only to find that the writing said, "U.S. Patents pending."
