Barry's Relatively Speaking: Amazed Colonial Farmers
Posted on Jul 10, 2012
Barry's Relatively Speaking shares the personal experiences and stories of genealogists found in the Everton Genealogical Helper Magazine collection on MyGenShare.com. W. Kerr shares the following experience.
When my sister, who had never shown much interest in my stories of our many ancestors, called me one afternoon and asked, "Don't we have colonial ancestors from New Jersey?" I was rather surprised. Then she went on to tell me about a college scholarship she had applied for, and asked if I could write to her college financial office explaining our colonial ancestry. Needless to say, I agreed to write the letter, and the next day sent off a pedigree chart with a covering letter. Several weeks later my sister called again—to tell me that I had proved her eligibility and that she had been awarded a $200.00 scholarship. No doubt those colonial New Jersey farmers would have been amazed had they known that one day they would help finance a great-great-great-granddaughter' s higher education!
