In researching my ancestors, my maternal great grand parents; Hugh Gunn born 23 May 1806 who married 19 November 1839 Elizabeth Rose Strachan born 12 September 1819 both born in Thurso, Caithness County, Scotland, their eleven children and their descendants: I, as most genealogists, had this article pop out of the pages with a bang much to my amusement and amazement.
"William Gustavus Gun and Miss Emily Maria Pistol of Petersburg, Virginia were married in Petersburg by Reverend Cannon of Baltimore, Maryland, 9 June 1823."
Vital Records from The National Intelligencer. (District of Columbie (1823) pg. 97,17 June
The family of Hugh & Elizabeth Gunn left Scotland for Quebec, Canada in 1841, removed to Montreal 1846, Ottowa 1853, New York 1863, Worcester, Massachusetts 1865, and arrived in California in sections from 1865 to 1880. The names of the eleven children are: Elizabeth Rose born 9 September 1840 Thurso, Scotland; Louisa Mae born 8 October 1842 Quebec; William John born 31 May 1844 Quebec; Frances (my great-grandmother) born 21 May 1846 Montreal; Christina born 4 June 1848 Montreal; Isabella born 25 February 1851 Montreal; Hugh Charles died infant and former two unmarried; Robert W. born 1 September 1853 Ottowa; Walter born 17 July 1857 Ottowa; Hugh born 6 May 1859 Ottowa; and Jessie Maude born 28 March 1861 Ottowa.
