Barry's Relatively Speaking: That's My Grandparent's Picture!
Posted on Sep 26, 2012
Barry's Relatively Speaking shares the personal experiences and stories of genealogists found in the Everton Genealogical Helper Magazine collection on MyGenShare.com. Mabel shares the following experience.
As librarian at the Iowa Genealogical Society I found little time to work on my own notebooks and even a smaller amount of time to browse as I helped others. In my mail I had received a pictorial family chart from a pen pal working on the Robert Oldham lineage and I was very thrilled and pleased with the chart. I decided to put it on the wall where I could share it with others.
A few days later one of the library attendants came in to work on her lineage and saw the chart and exclaimed to another attendant, "THAT'S MY GRANDPARENT'S PICTURES." The other attendant replied, "YOU BETTER GO TALK TO THE LIBRARIAN" . . .and talk we did! Her grandparents were the great grandparents of my husband. Such a thrill! Such laughter . . .here we had worked together many, many months and now we were cousins. Genealogy is such fun! When I returned home that night I had good news for my husband. "I found you a cousin and she's bringing over some pictures to show us." Now, I finally stirred up interest in genealogy in my husband. Sharing is neat!
