Barry's Relatively Speaking: Something In Common With The President
Posted on Oct 16, 2012
Barry's Relatively Speaking shares the personal experiences and stories of genealogists found in the Everton Genealogical Helper Magazine collection on MyGenShare.com. Barbara shares the following experience.
There is an interesting article in the January Westways about the Reagan's historic hideaway (now the official Western White House) at Refugio near Santa Barbara, California. The article described a tidal wave which, in December, 1812 carried the smuggling ship Mercury from its anchorage at Refugio Bay one mile through a canyon on a 50 foot wave, and then back again to the mouth of the bay much to the bewilderment of its passengers- My 3rd great grandmother, Maria Antoinetta Stuart of Scotland was aboard the ship at the time, and she and the Mercury's captain George Washington Ayers were expecting a child. Five months after this weird experience their daughter Maria Ayers was born at sea, and one month later, in June, 1813, the Mercury was captured at this very same spot in Refugio where the President and Mrs. Reagan's ranch now stands! What a thrill to know the exact place of entry of one's ancestors, and wouldn't they have laughed if someone had prophesied then that one day the President of the United States would live in this same haven - El Refugio!
