Barry's Relatively Speaking: Anna Unk ???
Posted on Nov 27, 2012
Barry's Relatively Speaking shares the personal experiences and stories of genealogists found in the Everton Genealogical Helper Magazine collection on MyGenShare.com. Rose shares the following experience.
A genealogical experience that happened to a friend of mine will stay with me for all my years.
While sending for the death certificate of her grandmother she hoped to learn the maiden name of her great-grandmother who was of Indian origin. Sure enough, there it was Anna UNK.
Now, since both my friend and I work we do alot of our sharing over the telephone. When she called to tell me she was very excited, and I too for her, I didn't think too much about it since UNK sounded very Indian. She, in the meantime, telephoned all her brothers to tell them of her find. They highly praised her and told her how wonderful it all was. She was on cloud nine.
When we finally did get together to compare notes, and I saw the death certificate, I nearly died from laughing so hard (at my own ignorance). For there it was Anna UNK. Of course UNK standing for UNKNOWN!
Her disappointment didn't last long, and we've had many a laugh over that one.
